WordPress Writing Prompt: Too Soon?
Can anything be funny, or are some things off limits?.

“Too soon?”

According to the Urban Dictionary: A phrase used to respond to someone making a comment that was intended to be funny, but touches on subject matter that shouldn’t be joked about, usually because it was a recent event (being in the last decade or so).

Old Boss, quite professionally: “Old Assistant, I’d like you to meet New Assistant.
New Assistant, this is Old Assistant.”

Me with an unusual lightness: “Hi New Assistant. You got the job because I got leukemia.” Old Boss turned to me with that startled look that says this kind of joke was inappropriate. Too soon after I was diagnosed. Too soon as there was no relationship built with New Assistant.

New Assistant, as she hesitated not knowing quite what to say: “It’s nice to meet you.” She walked off and I moved on feeling embarrassed at my gaff. It was my way of handling the seriousness of it all. But, it was just too soon.

I thought it was pretty funny until I got “the look” and New Assistant squirmed not knowing how to respond. Lesson learned.
